EMC launches disaster recovery service

EMC launches disaster recovery service
EMC has added a new program called Managed Availability Services to its services portfolio. EMC Global Services pros will create business continuity plans for users of the service and consult with them as they redesign disaster recovery plans. The new offering is immediately available.

In a separate release, EMC announced that the Scotts Miracle-Gro company has deployed EmailXtender and DiskXtender for data compliance and archiving. According to EMC, Scotts saw a 40% reduction in its primary Exchange data, reduced backup windows for Exchange from 16 hours to six hours and recovered 1 TB of free space in its Celerra NAS environment.

Dell today said it has agreed to acquire The Networked Storage Company, a U.K.-based consultancy specializing in helping companies evaluate, select, and implement storage and IT infrastructures. Dell did not disclose the acquisition price for the company, which lists several large European financial institutions as customers.

GlassHouse files for IPO
Storage consultant GlassHouse Technologies hopes to raise $100 million by becoming a public company early next year. GlassHouse filed a registration statement on Form S-1 with the SEC for a proposed IPO of its common stock.

CommVault goes after NetBackup, Legato users
CommVault is stirring the pot in the data backup market with a marketing campaign that will feature case studies of users who have switched from Symantec's NetBackup or EMC's Legato Networker to CommVault's Simpana product.

Brain surgeons pick Quantum
The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) has deployed Quantum's DXi-Series appliance. The association, with more than 7,200 members worldwide, has a five-person IT staff responsible for three sites, 32 servers and seven Web sites. AANS was missing backup windows with tape, but adding disk-based backup with data deduplication provided a retention rate of 27 TB of raw backup data in 1 TB of usable disk space, allowing the association to keep more than a month's worth of data on site.

MessageOne adds new message import features
MessageOne's Email Management Services have added new features for Exchange message and .pst import. For Exchange, EMS can be configured to import for specific time periods or targeted classes of users. When importing .pst files, EMS automatically reassociates them with their original Exchange message metadata.

Asempra updates Business Continuity Server
Asempra unveiled Business Continuity Server (BCS) version 2.6, adding better support for SQL servers, thin provisioning and additional third-party compatibility with Storvault, Lefthand Networks and Hewlett-Packard All-in-One products. BCS 2.6 is available immediately through Asempra's channel, with a list price starting at $15,000.

Community Health Plan uses Silver Peak for disaster recovery
Community Health Plan has deployed Silver Peak's NX appliances to accelerate replication between distributed iSCSI SANs. Community Health Plan averages 10 GB to 15 GB of traffic per hour over a 10 Mbps Internet VPN tunnel, the majority of which is iSCSI traffic between Compellent SANs

Beowulf stores footage with Archion
Archion said its Alliance SAN was used for the post production work of Robert Zemeckis' animated film, Beowulf. Non-Linear Solutions acquired 8 TB of the product for its post-production work on the film.

Grand Canyon University goes with Pillar
Pillar Data said Grand Canyon University (GCU) standardized on the Pillar Axiom SAN. The university is running one Axiom in its back office to store student and financial information, and a second one stores the application used to administrate online courses. The university was using DAS storage, but it wanted to scale up as its student body is growing.

Remote Backup Systems, NetEx expand VMware support
Remote Backup Systems announced that its RBackup remote backup software is now compatible with VMware Server. RBackup Server can run as an application or a service under VMware. It supports multithreading and allows mapping of backup clients to specific drives. It runs on all versions of Windows.

NetEx announced HyperIP WAN optimization software for VMware ESX Server. HyperIP for VMware is also the first software-only release of the product by NetEx. The product is priced based on bandwidth required, with data rates from 1 Mbps to OC-12 and higher.

Pivot3 appoints vice president
Clustered IP storage vendor Pivot3 appointed Marc Tanguay as vice president of sales. Tanguay had been vice president of channels at ONStor and previously worked for Network Appliance and Quantum.
