SunGard survey says virtualization has a role in disaster recovery

A new survey "The 2009 State of Disaster Recovery" commissioned by SunGard Availability Services and conducted by Harris Interactive said virtualization can play a major role in disaster recovery. Seventy-four percent of IT respondents said virtualization has a role in DR, but it's not a total solution for disaster recovery plans. One-quarter of IT respondents said they would never include virtualization technologies in their disaster recovery plans.

Sixty percent of IT respondents said they have virtualization in place now as a recovery tool from unplanned outages -- but only 29 percent have used it successfully. Eight percent said they used virtualization unsuccessfully. Another 29 percent of IT decision-makers said they have deployed virtualization but not yet used it as a tool for disaster recovery.

This survey was conducted online and had 497 qualified respondents, including 277 business and 220 IT participants. Qualified business respondents hold at least a director level title and have associated responsibilities, such as business and staff, in business areas. Qualified IT respondents hold at least a manager level title and have associated responsibilities, such as business and staff, in IT areas. All respondents came from companies with 50 or more employees.

continuity for VMware environments

EMC Corp. announced new consulting and managed services for virtualization and business continuity. EMC Global Services can now integrate VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager into customers' EMC business continuity environments to automate recovery of virtual environments. The new service include: EMC consulting services for VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager, EMC design and implementation for VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager, EMC education services for VMware environments, and EMC residency services for VMware environments.

ProStor Systems announces InfiniVault 2.0

ProStor Systems Inc. announced InfiniVault 2.0, adding remote replication to the removable disk system. InfiniVault 2.0 allows users to send copies of data to remote sites for disaster recovery. It can also create read/write vaults to allow third-party applications and includes a second Gigabit Ethernet port to segregate data from management traffic.

RCN Metro Optical Networks announces new colocation facility

RCN Metro Optical Networks, a division of RCN Corp., announced the availability of a new high-density colocation facility for disaster recovery purposes at 165 Halsey Street, Newark, NJ. This colocation center is a fully secure, temperature-controlled facility, offering power-ready racks, cabinets and bulk space. The facility also offers 24/7 monitoring and access control via RCN NOCs, an ANSUL Fire Suppression System and an APC Hot Aisle Containment System.

StorageCraft offers pricing upgrade for ShadowProtect Server Edition

StorageCraft Technology Corp. announced it is offering special competitive upgrade pricing on StorageCraft ShadowProtect Server Edition 3.3, the latest version of ShadowProtect line of disk-based backup, disaster recovery and system migration software. The special pricing includes a discount for businesses that use server versions of Commvault Simpana, BakBone NetVault, Acronis True Image, Symantec Backup Exec, and Computer Associates ARCserve wishing to purchase StorageCraft ShadowProtect Server Edition 3.3.
